KULAI: A personal orphanage in Kulai, Johor, has been ordered to briefly shut after its president was arrested for alleged involvement in rape and abuse circumstances involving residents.
According to Kulai police chief Tan Seng Lee, the orphanage president was arrested on November 30 following allegations that he raped and impregnated a 17-year-old resident between 2020 and 2022, when she was aged 13 to fifteen years.
The 59-year-old suspect – who, together with the orphanage, has not been named – was arrested once more on December 10 for alleged baby abuse after closed-circuit tv (CCTV) footage confirmed him aggressively beating a woman in the identical orphanage, in response to information outlet Malay Mail.
The man stood trial on the Sessions Court in Johor Bahru on Sunday (December 15) on costs of rape and baby abuse.
Johor Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairperson Khairin-Nisa Ismail @ Md On mentioned the order to shut the orphanage was issued by the director basic of the Johor Welfare Department in accordance with part 15 of the Care Centers Act 1993.
The Johor Welfare Department has taken custody of all 55 youngsters, aged between 10 and 17, residing on the orphanage.
