Donald Trump has named Peter Navarro, a former aide jailed for contempt of Congress throughout the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol, as senior White House financial adviser.

On his social media platform Truth Social, President-elect announced that he would make Navarro his senior advisor on commerce and manufacturing to assist “actually make American manufacturing nice once more.”

Navarro, a distinguished China hawk, was a key White House adviser in Washington’s commerce clashes with Beijing throughout Trump’s first presidency.

Trump stated Navarro’s mission in his new position “will probably be to assist advance and efficiently talk Trump’s agendas on manufacturing, tariffs and commerce.”

Navarro spent 4 months in federal jail in Miami after being convicted of refusing to adjust to a subpoena from a congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.

During his 2023 trial, prosecutors stated Navarro “selected allegiance” to Trump over complying with the lawmakers’ subpoena. Navarro’s legal professionals argued that the state had not confirmed that the enterprise marketing consultant had “willfully” ignored the subpoena.

Even after Biden received the 2020 presidential election, Navarro remained a staunch public defender of Trump, persevering with to assert that the voting outcomes have been rigged and that the victory had been stolen from him.

On Wednesday, Trump wrote that Navarro had been “handled horribly by the Deep State, or no matter you wish to name it.”
